Lisa Irey and her DECA students are making history this year
on behalf of Valley. DECA is an International
Association which prepares students as emerging leaders and entrepreneurs. Valley students have had a successful year in
DECA, as the program continues to grow!
In September, the Valley chapter partnered with SE Polk
schools for Miracle Minute. During the
Valley-SE Polk football game, students from each school ran the stands on their
perspective sides for one minute.
Together, these two school chapters raised over $1,400, which is the
most money raised at a single event in Iowa DECA history. The money raised was donated to MDA, which is
DECA’s national charity.
In October, Lisa took 33 students to the Fall Leadership
Conference held in Des Moines. Students
were able to network with over 400 students from across Iowa, attend workshop
sessions regarding leadership, and were exposed to competition event
preparation. It was a great success!
Lisa took 16 students to the Center Region Conference held
in Kansas City in November. This
conference allows students to network with others from several states
throughout the Midwest. Opportunities
for leadership practice and preparation once again the focus for such a
conference.
This year, 3 Valley Chapter members are preparing to run for
a State Officer position. This is the
first time in Valley history! These
students are working hard to prepare to take on the challenge of such an
important role.
Valley's students are now gearing up to take competitive events to the district competition on January 20th and the state competition on February 28-29th. If students do well enough, they will go to Nashville, TN for the International Career Development Competition in April!
