Garrett Hawkins
Level II Special Education Teacher

Goal #1: Help students on his roster become more independent.

Garrett is using the Gradual Release and Responsibility framework to structure his classes.  He believes that students will be able to perform tasks independently with the new structure he has introduced.  The framework is as follows:

I do – This means the teacher will present the material or model how to complete a task.
We do—The teacher and the student will work together to complete a task.
We do together – The student attempts the task independently with the teachers support.
You do—The student is able to complete the task independently.

Goal #2: Increase efficiency/structure within in the classroom to help students become more proficient.

Garrett is co-teaching Level II Special Education students in PR (Practical) Reading with Dale Erikson.  They are working to separate students into small groups by skill level and creating a new final project to assess students at their particular skill level.

Garrett and Dale are using Literary Circles as an avenue to assess students on reading skills.  Currently, they are all reading the small book and working as a large group on the components of a lit circle: Summarizing, Discussion Questions, Vocabulary, Visualization, Connecting to text.

In December, students will be presenting a final project in the form of WeVideo.  More updates will be coming as this project continues.
