Annie Packer
Physical Education
Goal: The Physical Education department is
working to create fitness tracks that are accessible and practical for students.
Annie
Packard is teaching a P.E. track that includes Fitness Walking, Dance, Self-Defense
Training, and Yoga. An important
component to each unit is providing authentic experiences and providing access
to experts.
Authentic connections:
Fitness Walking: students have been
challenged with a timed walk, have been trained in the proper form, have
coached each other on walking form, and experienced a fast-paced walk at
Raccoon River Park. Annie is also working
with Brian Rhoads to continue to expand what this course can offer by
implementing the use of heart monitors, pedometers, etc.
Self- Defense: Annie is have Two
Rivers Martial Arts instructors come to Valley and give students practical
information about form and use of this topic.
Dance: A student from Ecuador will be
teaching his peers a cultural dance that he has known since childhood. Annie is looking to capitalize on the diverse
cultural make-up of her classes and highlight the talents of her students.
Yoga: Lindsay from Lindsay Opp
Studios will be coming each block day to allow students to experience Yoga here
at Valley. In addition, Annie is teaming
up with Power Life Yoga to have some additional experiences for students and
possibly access to studios outside of class time.
Student Response:
Students are excited about the
opportunities this course offers. One
student stated “I am not just sitting on the sidelines because I am not
athletic. I am actually able to
participate!” This course is aimed at
being practical and all-inclusive in the fitness options offered. Another student explained that this is the
first P.E. track she has been able to participate in and really enjoy!
